On the last day we set off at the crack of dawn to climb Mount Srd. It’s not a tough hike, as there are 14 stops for us to take in the views over Dubrovnik, but most people take the cable car or a taxi to the top.
Not on these holidays .
“You have to climb the mountain to get the view”, I tell them.
It’s all a lot more rewarding when you’ve walked it and you’re been able to see your progress. Look at how far you’ve come, not back, I remind the early bird hikers.
It’s not the easy road, not an instant reward but delayed gratification, which is a longer-lasting and more powerful sense of satisfaction.
At the top we use the amphitheatre as our morning yoga studio, and we have views across Dubrovnik, behind to Bosnia and down to Montenegro.
On most days we have the view, that is.
However, on the last week, we had no view, due to the weather, so I had to change tack.
“The magic happens in the space and the unknown”. This is another of my favourite catchphrases. Which comes in handy when I have absolutely no idea what the **** is going to happen next. I try not to “worry”, but instead “wonder” what lies ahead.
For some, it’s the unknown of taking the zip wire along the coast towards Dubrovnik or taking in the best views from Park Orsula, but for some, it’s thick fog and we are almost in the clouds.
They remain in good spirits though, that’s the power of culture of positivity within the group.
It reminds me of the Elysian Fields in Gladiator, that incredible scene through the sunflowers. It’s like heaven on earth, there’s something atmospheric, mystical and almost ethereal about it.
While I’m wondering what I’m going to do to detract from the adverse weather conditions, I’m hit with an idea.…
Sunflowers turn to face the sun when it’s out, but when it’s not out, they turn to each other.
So I turn to Anna, my Guest Teacher and I ask if she’d like to share the class with me. I will do the first half and she will do the second half. I know she can think on her feet and that she thrives on these moments, she has that kind of magic and we have been in tune all week.
She comes up with an ingenious idea for some partner yoga for the second half where we turn to each other like sunflowers.
It was perfect, unexpected, better than I could have imagined had it just been me.
I’m reminded that things don’t always turn out as you expect them to, but they turn out better.
And I’m filled with gratitude for this unique moment, where I remember the big picture – we are stronger together. We share the light with each other.
