There are times to set a course.
And there are times to stop trying to control the waters.
Over the past four weeks, Inner Compass has been an exploration of what it means to navigate from within — to orient, discover what matters, find our True North, and eventually return home to ourselves.
On Friday, we gather for our Closing Circle on the evening following the Full Moon lunar eclipse.
And it feels fitting that we finish with water.
The intelligence of water
Water doesn’t move in straight lines.
It curves. Spirals. Changes direction. Finds openings.
It can be extraordinarily powerful without becoming rigid.
And perhaps there is something here for us.
So much of modern life teaches us to push harder, plan more, optimise ourselves and keep moving towards the next destination.
But nature offers another kind of intelligence.
Sense. Respond. Adapt. Flow.
A fish moving through water doesn’t need to mentally calculate every change in current. Its whole body is involved in sensing its environment.
Fish even possess a remarkable sensory system called the lateral line, allowing them to detect subtle movement and pressure changes in the water around them.
There is something beautifully symbolic about that.
What happens when we stop relying solely on the thinking mind and begin listening again through the body?
Perhaps our natural intelligence was never lost.
Perhaps we’ve simply become very good at overriding it.
Returning to our natural intelligence
This will be at the heart of Friday’s practice.
Through fluid, spiralling movement we’ll explore what happens when we stop forcing the body into predetermined shapes and allow one movement to lead naturally into another.
We’ll play with sensing rather than knowing.
Following and separating.
Drifting and reorienting.
Finding our own direction even when the waters around us are moving.
Because an Inner Compass isn’t there to make life predictable.
It’s there to help us find ourselves within the unpredictability.
Living in grace
And this brings me to the idea I’ve been sitting with most strongly for this Closing Circle:
Living in Grace.
Grace isn’t about being endlessly serene.
It isn’t passivity.
And it certainly isn’t pretending everything is fine.
For me, grace is increasingly about how we meet what is here.
Can I remain responsive without abandoning myself?
Can I change course without losing my direction?
Can I soften without collapsing?
Can I hold my centre while allowing life to move me?
Like a sailor, we don’t command the sea.
We learn to read the conditions.
We adjust the sails.
And we keep checking our bearing.
After the eclipse
By the time we meet on Friday evening, the lunar eclipse will have already passed earlier that day.
So rather than gathering to anticipate something, we’ll meet in the space afterwards.
A lunar eclipse offers us a beautiful image of light becoming temporarily obscured by shadow and then visible again.
Which leaves us with a simple question:
What can I see more clearly now?
Not only after the eclipse.
After these four weeks.
After the journeys we’ve taken.
After the things life itself has shown us.
We will reflect on what has run its course, but I’m less interested in dramatic declarations of “letting go” than in noticing what may already be moving away naturally.
Sometimes we don’t need to rip something out by the roots.
We simply stop carrying it.
The Closing Circle
Our 90 minutes together will weave:
fluid movement · breath · stillness · reflection · sharing · ritual
We’ll revisit our four Bearings:
Orient — Where am I?
Discover — What matters most?
Navigate — What direction feels true?
Return — Where am I now?
And then perhaps one final question:
How do I want to BE as I move forward?
Because maybe True North isn’t only about where we’re going.
Maybe it’s about the quality we bring to the journey.
More presence.
More courage.
More curiosity.
More compassion.
More truth.
More grace.
Not someday.
In the ordinary moments of an ordinary life.
Perhaps that’s where our greatest practice lies.
Return to your natural intelligence. Find your True North. Live in grace.
